Memorable Manitobans: David Dexter Lewers (1872-?)

Grain company executive.

Born at Garden Island, Ontario on 6 January 1872, son of David and Agnes Lewers, he was educated locally then worked as a machinist with Calvin Company at Garden Island (1886-1890). He was a marine engineer (1890-1893) before moving to Hartney in 1893. There, he worked as a grain buyer (1894-1899). He was a traveller for the Northern Elevator Company (c1903), Superintendent of Western Canada for the Winnipeg Elevator Company (?-1910) then he became manager of the Atlas Elevator Company in 1910.

On 12 November 1903, he married Lorine Elizabeth Wood (1881-1923) at Souris and they subsequently had four children: Dorothy Lewers (1904-?), Jack Lewers (1907-?), Lorine Lewers (1913-?), and David Dexter Lewers (1916-1970). He was a member of the Adanac Club, Conservative party, and Presbyterian church. His recreations included motoring and curling. He lived at 62 Sherbrook Street (c1915).

He died at Vancouver, British Columbia on 20 May 1938.
