Gerard Lecuyer

Educator, MLA (1981-1986), MLA (1986-1988), community advocate.
Born at Ste. Agathe on 2 August 1936, one of 14 children of Albert Lecuyer (1905-1971) and Suzanne Delaloye (1910-2000), he grew there then attended St. Boniface College and the University of Manitoba. After working in the private sector for a time, he became a teacher in the St. Boniface School Division. He worked with the CIDA in Sierra Leone and Algeria before entering provincial politics.
Elected to the Manitoba Legislative Assembly at the 1981 general election and re-elected in 1986, he served as Minister of Environment, Workplace Safety and Health (1983-1988). He was defeated in the 1988 general election. For two years, he promoted French language services in Yukon, returning in 1990 to become Executive Director of the Fédération provinciale des comités de parents du Manitoba. In 1992, he received a Prix Riel in recognition of his work in community development.
His advocacy culminated in a 1993 Supreme Court ruling in favour of French language education leading to the creation of the Division scolaire franco-manitobaine in 1994. He later returned to Yukon, successfully advocating for school governance rights (1996) before returning to Manitoba to consult in education, environment, and community development.
In 1959, he married schoolteacher Irene Arnould (1932-2009) and they had five children, including Denise Lecuyer (1960-2020).
He died at the Victoria Hospital
