Memorable Manitobans: Alexander Lawrence (1846-1899)

Farmer, customs officer, MLA (1888-1892).

Born in Kinross-shire, Scotland in 1846 and educated in Scotland and England, he emigrated to Canada. On 22 January 1880, he married Margaret Bond (?-?) of Oxford County, Ontario. He took up a farm in southern Manitoba before being acclaimed to the Manitoba Legislature in 1888. He was later appointed customs officer at Gretna. He died at Gretna on 4 August 1899 and was buried in the Morden Hillside Cemetery.
