Memorable Manitobans: Dorothy “Dot” Kozak (1932-2009)

Athlete.

Born at Winnipeg on 17 April 1932 to John Kozak and Lena Belinsky, her job career included working for the Winnipeg Police (Traffic Department), Great West Life, and 25 years with the Federal Government (Services and Supply) in Ottawa.

She excelled in athleticism. Some of her accomplishments included: winning the J. B. McBryde Rose Bowl for best female athlete (Manitoba, 1953); coming first in the 100-yard sprint, broad jump, discus, and ball-throw at the Scottish Amateur Athletic 47th Annual Games; winning the 220-yard sprint at the CNE Toronto International Track and Field Meet (1953); being a member of the Canadian Ladies Relay Team that won a Bronze Medal for Canada at the British Empire Games (1954); and breaking the Canadian record for the Ladies Broad Jump at Hamilton, Ontario (1956). Prior to the 1956 Olympics, she moved to Calgary to train, and while there, won the A. R. Lawrence Medal for Alberta’s Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year. She was a member of the Women’s Canadian Olympic Relay Team at the Melbourne, Australia Olympics that same year. She stayed in Australia for another 18 months to work and continue training, then returned to Winnipeg.

She was also a long-time member of the Canadian Ukrainian Athletic Club’s Ladies Baseball Team. In 1966, at the Manitoba Five Pin Bowling Association, she won the A Singles with a 970 score. After her track and field days were over, she took up golfing, and in 1964 shot a hole-in-one at St. Boniface Golf Course.

She died at Winnipeg on 14 June 2009 and was buried in the Glen Eden Memorial Gardens.
