Memorable Manitobans: Vivien Sysak “Roma” Konyk (1931-2016)

Entertainer.

Born at Winnipeg on 29 July 1931, daughter of Roy and Dorothy Sysak, cousin of well-known singer Juliette Cavazzi, she grew up in the Elmwood and North Kildonan neighbourhoods. She studied voice and piano at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, and was featured on the CBC Radio program “Singing Stars of Tomorrow.” After returning to Winnipeg in 1960, she hosted “Cradle Club” on the CJAY television station in the early 1960s. She became well-known as “Miss Roma” of the children’s program “Romper Room.” In the late 1970s, she operated an employment agency. She died at Winnipeg suddenly on 24 June 2016.
