Memorable Manitobans: Richard Kenneth Kolt (1940-2020)

Musician, composer.

Born at Winnipeg on 31 March 1940, son of John A. “Jack” Kolt and Pauline “Lee” Lasky (1915-1980), twin of Robert “Bob” Kolt, music was always part of his life. He learned to play accordion and other instruments. In partnership with his father and brother, they operated Kolt Music School and Sales in the city’s North End for 45 years. The Kolt Brothers band performed at weddings and special occasions for over 20 years, and recorded several albums. He composed many songs, for himself and artists ranging from Ray St. Germain to Bill Kenny of the Ink Spots, and for record labels A & M Records and London Recordings. One of his composition was “Go Blue Bombers”, the football team’s fight song in the 1970s.

In 1965, he married Beverley Lynne and they had two sons. In retirement, he and his wife move to St. Albert, Alberta to be closer to their family. He died there on 31 March 2020.
