Memorable Manitobans: Jozef Kiska (1946-2022)

Community activist.

Born at Bratislava, Czechoslovakia on 27 December 1946, he served in the military before coming to Canada in 1968. He established a structural steel drafting business at Winnipeg and was active in the city’s Slovak community, serving as President of the local branch of the Canadian Slovak League, an executive member of the Canadian National Council and the Slovak World Congress. He later served as an Honorary Consul on behalf of the Slovak government. He created the “Voice of Slovakia,” a community television program (1986-1996), was a founding member of the Black Ribbon Day Committee, and an active member of the Folk Arts Council of Winnipeg. In recognition of his community service, he received the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal (2002). He died at Winnipeg on 2 January 2022, survived by a wife and three adult children.
