Memorable Manitobans: Mary Elizabeth Kelly (c1882-1970)

Educator.

Born in Londonderry, Northern Ireland around 1882, she taught school before emigrating to Canada in 1902. Following her arrival in Winnipeg, she joined the teaching staff of the Winnipeg School Division and taught at Somerset School (1911-1918). She was the Principal of Somerset School from 1918 to 1944, when she retired. She was a member of Knox United Church (and later Sturgeon Creek United Church), Retired Women Teachers Association, and University of Winnipeg Women's Auxiliary. She died unmarried at Winnipeg on 14 November 1970 and was buried in the Brookside Cemetery.
