Born at Rome, New York on 23 February 1873, son of Michael Kelly and Elizabeth Phoebe O’Neill (1848-1936), he worked as a building contractor in partnership with his brother John J. Kelly and James McDole until he became Vice-President and Secretary-Treasurer of the National Construction Company (1911-1915). He worked as a bricklayer through the 1920s and was retired by 1935.
He and wife Margaret Helena Shaw (1979-1952) had seven children: Margaret Helena Kelly (1905-1969, wife of J. Henry Hartman), Michael Kelly (1907-1974), Kathleen Mable Kelly (1909-2002, wife of Carl Lambert Lund), Bernard James Kelly (1912-1976), Veronica Elizabeth “Betty” Kelly (1915-2002, wife of Orville Lewis Bonham), Joseph Shaw Kelly (1921-2000), and Mary Theresa Kelly (?-?, wife of R. L. Kirkhart).
He died at the St. Boniface Hospital on 19 February 1969 and was buried in the Assumption Roman Catholic Cemetery.
