Memorable Manitobans: George Frederick Keele (1853-1940)

Contractor, building inspector.

Born at Toronto, Ontario on 12 June 1853, he came to Manitoba in 1881 and homesteaded near Crystal City and for a time worked for Thomas Greenway and built several of the first residences in Crystal City. He moved to Winnipeg in 1885 and built many residences in the north end of the city. He lived at Victoria, British Columbia for two years in the early 20th century but returned to Winnipeg before the outbreak of the First World War and worked for 17 years as an inspector of Manitoba buildings for the federal government, retiring around 1932. He died at his East Kildonan home, 313 Washington Avenue, on 3 January 1940 and was buried in St. John’s Cemetery. He was survived by a widow, two sons, and a daughter.
