Memorable Manitobans: William Henry “Bill” Kasperski (1920-1989)

Engineer.

Born at Admiral, Saskatchewan on 26 June 1920, son of William John Kasperski and Sophia Kobusiak, he served in Italy and Holland with the Royal Canadian Artillery during the Second World War. After his military discharge, he studied Mechanical Engineering at the University of Saskatchewan and graduated in 1949.

For eight year, he was a Plant Maintenance and Construction Engineer for Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company. In 1957, he joined the Manitoba Hydro-Electric Board as its Resident Engineer at Selkirk, later rising to become Manager of the facility. In 1961, with the merger of the Board to become Manitoba Hydro, he went to the site of the Grand Rapid Generating Station as Resident Engineer until its completion in 1965. The following year, he was part of the first contingent of workers at the future site of the Kettle Generating Station. He then spent a year at Winnipeg as Construction Manager of Nelson River Projects (Stage 1) involving the Kettle site, Lake Winnipeg regulation, and the Churchill River diversion. From 1967 to 1972, he was Resident Engineer at the Kettle Rapids. He became Assistant Director of the newly formed Generating Projects Division in 1973.

In 1976, he took a leave from Manitoba Hydro to serve as Construction Manager for ATCO Industries in Saudi Arabia, moving to Bahrain in 1977 to work with Comstock as Project Manager of a 500-bed hospital and integrated medical centre. He retired from Hydro in December 1977. He received a Merit Award from the Association of Professional Engineers of Manitoba (1981).

He died at Revelstoke, British Columbia on 26 November 1989.
