Memorable Manitobans: John Henry Kane (1861-1951)

Land promoter.

Born at Braidwood, Illinois on 25 March 1861, he was a grain buyer in Illinois before moving to Manitoba with his wife Elizabeth Ann McGreevy. In 1906, he began to buy newly drained land in the southern part of the province with the goal of attracting American immigrants to establish farms on it. Grain storage facilities were built at a site along the railway line through the area that became known as Kane. In 1915, he built a model farmstead one mile north of St. Jean to allow new farmers to practice the skills needed to farm the predominantly clay-rich soils of the region. Two years later, he brought a train-load of farmers and their equipment to southern Manitoba from Illinois. He died at Pontiac, Illinois on 26 December 1951. He is commemorated by a roadside monument in the community of Kane.
