Memorable Manitobans: Joan Doris LeCain Jarvis (1933-2013)Artist, community activist. Born at Kenora, Ontario in 1933, she enrolled in a Fine Arts program at the University of Manitoba in the 1970s. She worked mainly with clay and received grants from the Manitoba Arts Council and Canada Council, including one to research the incorporation of gemstones into porcelain. As founding Chair of the Board of Directors of Artspace, she was a driving force behind the renovation of Winnipeg’s Gault Building into a centre for Winnipeg’s visual art and literary organizations.
