Memorable Manitobans: Blake Wilson James (1928-2022)

Filmmaker.

Born on 14 February 1928, son of Gordon James (1900-1976) and Susanne Maragret Small (c1896-1993), he was raised on the family farm near Lydiatt. As a young man, he moved to Winnipeg and worked as a commercial artist, later meeting artist Bill Mason and together they worked for Crawley Films and later the National Film Board of Canada. Among his NFB directorial works were Through a Broken Pane (1975), Prairie Album (1979), and Canada Vignettes: Wop May (1979). He also worked on films produced and directed by Mason such as Paddle to the Sea (1966), The Rise and Fall of the Great Lakes (1968), and Death of a Legend (1971). He died at Beausejour on 20 November 2022 and was buried in the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery.
