Memorable Manitobans: John “Jock” Inglis (1920-2006)

Community activist.

Born at Winnipeg on 18 April 1920 to Helen McPherson Somerville (1882-1977) and George Max Inglis (1888-1959), he spent his early years in the Sturgeon Creek community. On 6 September 1939, he joined the 12th Field Company, Royal Canadian Engineers (RCE), and left to serve in England in January 1940. He later joined the 31st Field Company, RCE, and saw service in France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany.

He returned to Canada in 1945 and served six years with the 6th Field Company, RCE Militia. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Winnipeg No. 1 Branch, and at the time of his death was its oldest living member. His service with the Legion covered 50 years, including 29 years on the executive and two terms as President. He was made a Life Member in 1972 and was awarded the Legion Meritorious Service Medal in 1981.

In 1941, he married Edith Mary “Pat” Beckenham (1919-2006) at Surrey, England, and they went on to have three children. He made a career as a printer and publisher at Winnipeg until struck with illness in 1968, and enjoyed the comradeship, curling, golf, and fishing with other members of his Legion branch.

He died at Winnipeg on 20 August 2006 and was buried in Green Acres Memorial Gardens.
