Memorable Manitobans: Emelia Marie Kishensky Hunchak (1917-2006)

Community activist.

Born at Transcona on 10 January 1917 to Ukrainian immigrants Barbara Churyk (1893-1955) and Frank Kishensky (1885-1956), she married Nicholas John Hunchak in 1939, and they went on to have three children.

She was active in her communities, and served as the President of the St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League (CWL), and then as National President of the Ukrainian CWL. For 30 years, she also volunteered at the Holy Family Nursing Home. Her careers in Winnipeg included working at the Municipal Hospitals, Eaton’s Store, and Manitoba Telephone System.

She died at Glenboro on 4 March 2006 and was buried in the Transcona Cemetery.
