Memorable Manitobans: Martin James “Marty” Hollenberg (1934-2021)

Physician, academic administrator, author.

Born at Winnipeg on 30 June 1934, son of Abraham Hollenberg (1900-1957) and brother of Charles H. Hollenberg, into a family of physicians, he graduated from the Manitoba Medical School in 1958. He had a career in medicine that spanned the globe, holding deanships at medical schools at Western University (London, Ontario) and the University of British Columbia (Vancouver, British Columbia). His interest in medicine and history led him to write the book Marco Polo: The Story of the Fastest Clipper (2006). He was later commissioned to write For the Love of Nature: Mammals Described and Illustrated by the Naturalists Gerald E. H. Barrett-Hamilton and Edward Adrian Wilson (2008). He died at Vancouver on 17 December 2021.
