Art director, artist.

Born at East Kildonan on 21 July 1953, one of ten children of Frederick Ralph Hayes (1924-2008) and Lillian Jane Currie (1928-2013), great-grandson of Henry Stephen Taylor, in 1974 he graduated from Red River College with training in advertising and a focus on illustration. After working successively for The Awarehouse and Foster’s Advertising Agency, in 1989 he joined the Winnipeg Free Press as a Supervisor in the Art Department, eventually becoming Art Director.

His interest in local history helped him to obtain a commission from Parks Canada for public art at The Forks National Historic Park. Subsequently, he made an original painting commissioned for the 125th anniversary of the Free Press in 1997. It was reproduced widely with the original displayed in the atrium of the newspaper offices. Its success encouraged him to pursue further artistic work.

Through his company Timepiece Publishing, he had a second career as an artist, painting nostalgic scenes of Winnipeg. He received corporate commissions from the Winnipeg Police Service, Winnipeg Airports Authority, Manitoba Public Insurance Corporation, Gardewine Trucking, and others, and commissioned pieces of gospel outreach. He displayed his art at the Manitoba Art Expo (of which he served as President), art galleries, and in juried shows across Canada. He was described by many as the “Norman Rockwell of the Prairies”. He was a member of the Manitoba Society of Artists and served as an Elder of Oxford Bible Church.

He died at Winnipeg on 2 August 2024, survived by his wife and two sons.
