Memorable Manitobans: Angus Morrison “Morris” Hay (1920-1989)

Municipal official.

Born in the RM of North Norfolk on 30 April 1920, son of George Hay and Johann MacDonald, he attended a one-room school and the Austin High School. During the Second World War, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force and served as a radar technician under the Royal Air Force. Upon returning home, in 1949 he married schoolteacher Audrey Marion Poyser (1914-2004) and they had a daughter and a son.

He worked in offices for the Village of MacGregor and Rural Municipality of North Norfolk, serving there for 26 years as Secretary-Treasurer. In 1974, he became a Department Head in the Manitoba Department of Municipal Affairs where he was instrumental in initiating a course at the University of Manitoba that provided accreditation to Municipal Secretary-Treasurers in Manitoba. He retired in 1984. An avid golfer, he organized the Grey Owl Golf Tournaments.

He died at Portage la Prairie on 13 September 1989 and was buried in the Austin Cemetery.
