Memorable Manitobans: Paul Alan George Grescoe (1939-2023)

Journalist, publisher, author.

Born at Winnipeg on 1 January 1939, son of George Henry Grescoe (1896-1971) and Christina Antonina Roscoe (1900-1995), brother of Donna Grescoe, he began a career in journalism with the Canadian Press, later working for the Brandon Sun, Winnipeg Tribune, and Toronto Telegram. During the 1970s and 1980s, he co-owned and was editorial director of a group of city magazines for Vancouver, Calgary, and Edmonton.

Among his books, written alone or with others including his wife Audrey Patterson Grescoe, were The Money Rustlers (1986), Jimmy: An Autobiography (1987), Flesh Wound: A Dan Rudnicki Mystery (1993), Vancouver: Visions of a City (1993), Blood Vessel: A Dan Rudnicki Mystery (1994), Fragments of Paradise: British Columbia's Wild and Wondrous Islands (1995), The Merchants of Venus: Inside Harlequin and the Empire of Romance (1996), 101 Uses for this Book (1996), The Mavericks: Lessons from the West's Winning Entrepreneurs (1999), Alaska: The Cruise-Lover's Guide (2002), Flight Path: How WestJet is Flying High in Canada's Most Turbulent Industry (2004), The Book of Letters: 150 Years of Private Canadian Correspondence (2004), Pass It On: The Astonishing Story of Savers and Value Village (2005), Book of War Letters: 100 Years of Private Canadian Correspondence (2005), The Book of Love Letters: Canadian Kinship, Friendship, and Romance (2006), Northern Tigers: Building Ethical Canadian Corporate Champions (2007), Wheels: The Legacy of Lloyd Cooper and his Calgary Roller Rink (2007), Hat Trick: A Life in the Hockey Rink, Oil Patch and Community (2009), and Trip of a Lifetime: The Making of the Rocky Mountaineer (2010).

He died at North Vancouver, British Columbia on 12 March 2023.
