Hewburn Nathaniel Greenidge
|
Physician.
Born at Georgetown, British Guiana (now Guyana) on 1 November 1893, son of Joseph Daniel Greenidge, he came to Winnipeg in 1913 and attended the Manitoba Medical College. During the First World War, he interrupted his studies to enlist in the Canadian Expeditionary Force, serving in England and France in the No. 2 Construction Battalion and the Canadian Army Medical Corps.
Returning from military duty, in 1920 he is believed to have become the first Black graduate of the University of Manitoba and its first Black physician graduate. He then spent a year at Liverpool, England attending the School of Tropical Science after which he practiced in Winnipeg for a short time. He returned to his home town, intending to visit his parents, where he died on 20 November 1921 after an illness of five months.
