Memorable Manitobans: Isaac Gotfried (1925-2025)

Businessman, Holocaust survivor.

Born at Czestochowa, Poland in 1925, his family perished in the Holocaust and he spent much of the Second World War in concentration camps, escaping into the woods shortly before liberation. He testified at the Buchenwald trials at Dachau, Germany in 1947. On arriving in Winnipeg, he worked at London Life and he and wife Hilda Goldberg (?-2019) had four daughters. After retirement, he devoted his time to giving presentations to over 25,000 people about his wartime experiences, and published a memoir entitled Lucky to Survive (2017), proceeds of which were donated to the Canadian Museum of Human Rights. He died at Winnipeg on 3 February 2025.
