Memorable Manitobans: Joseph Benjamin “J. B.” Gladstone (1904-1990)

Social activist, journalist.

Born in Panevezys, Lithuania in 1904, he and his family came to Brandon in 1908 and moved to Winnipeg after high school. He worked for years for the One Big Union and was associate editor of The Commonwealth, a CCF publication. He was a pioneer in the health food industry, and he edited Healthful Living Digest from 1955 to 1975. He retired to British Columbia in 1975 but later returned to Winnipeg where he died on 29 March 1990.
