Memorable Manitobans: Madeleine Gauvin (1922-2007)

Music teacher.

Born at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1922, daughter of Bertha Lisette Becker (c1882-1977) and Marshall Jerome Gauvin, she came to Winnipeg in 1927. She studied violin in Toronto, New York, and Europe. A violin and piano teacher since 1940, officially registered in 1943, she performed with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra (1948-1952) under Walter Kaufman. Since 1953, she had her more advanced students play in a string ensemble. She died at Winnipeg on 11 January 2007. She is commemorated by a scholarship offered by the Women’s Musical Club of Winnipeg.
