Memorable Manitobans: Roy Lawrence Flanigan (1905-2005)

Livestock merchant.

Born at London, Ontario on 31 January 1905 to Nancy Rhoda Outhouse (1875-1968) and George Henry Flanigan (1879-1943), he moved with his family to Tisdale, Saskatchewan in 1912, and then to Winnipeg in 1916. At age 19 he joined his father in business, soon becoming a partner in Geo. H. Flanigan and Sons Livestock Commission Agents, where he served as President after the passing of his father. He continued in the family business until his retirement in 1969.

On 10 November 1922, he married Vera Emma Smith (1903-1980) at Winnipeg. Following their divorce, he married Viola Blenda Holmberg (1910-1998) on 28 April 1932, with whom he had two children. He was a life member and director of the Winnipeg Livestock Exchange, serving there as President for five years. He joined the Free Masonry at the age of 21 and was a life member of Fidelity Lodge, Prince of Wales Chapter PZ and King Edward Preceptory. He was also a member of Khartum Temple Shriners for more than 50 years, and a life member of the Director Staff. He enjoyed the outdoors, particularly hunting, fishing, and golfing.

He died at Winnipeg on 22 July 2005 and was buried in the Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens.
