Memorable Manitobans: Rita Flamand (1931-2016)
Nurse, translator.
Born at Camperville on 28 August 1931, daughter of Peter Flamand and Sainte Anne de Lima (Fagnan), a career in practical nursing included service at a tuberculosis sanatorium at Winnipegosis in the mid-1950s. She was the founder and first President of the Manitoba Metis Women’s Association (1973) and received an Aboriginal Interpreter’s Certificate from Red River College (1998). She spoke several languages and was a Court Communicator for the Dauphin Law Courts. She translated books and television programs into the Michif language and was working on a Michif dictionary when she died. She loved singing, playing guitar, jigging, and socializing with her many friends and family. She died at Camperville on 4 May 2016 and was buried in the Camperville Metis Cemetery.
