Memorable Manitobans: John H. Epp (1909-2006)
Born at Petrovka, Orenburg, Russia on 23 July 1909 to Agatha Peter Froese (1881-1968) and Johann Epp (1877-1940), he immigrated to Canada in 1930, settling in Winnipeg. In 1936, he married Helen Regehr (1913-1995), with whom he went on to have three children. After her death, he married Kaethe Loewen. He was the founder of Independent Jewellers at Winnipeg and delighted in selling engagement rings to young couples.
A hunter all his life, he began big-game hunting in his fifties, and enjoyed telling stories about his life experiences. He was also a dedicated church-worker and long-time member of the Portage Avenue Mennonite Brethren Church.
He died at Winnipeg on 22 October 2006 and was buried in the Glen Eden Memorial Gardens.
