Memorable Manitobans: Emma Embree (1884-1972)

Educator.

Born at Amherst, Nova Scotia on 14 October 1884, daughter of Louisa Coates and Hazen Embree, she became an educator by the early 1900s and taught for 35 years. Within Manitoba, she was Principal of Sturgeon Creek School (1923) and Eriksdale School (1923-1924), and taught at Russell School (1924) and East Kildonan Collegiate (1925). She went on to teach for the Edmonton School Board before retiring in 1944. She died at Vancouver, British Columbia on 16 November 1972 and her body was returned to Nova Scotia for burial at her native Amherst.
