Memorable Manitobans: John Edwards (1834-1929)

Pioneer farmer.

Born at Port Hope, Ontario on 11 August 1834, he came to Manitoba and farmed near present-day Gladstone. In 1869, he married Sarah Fosters (?-1892) and they had six children: James Edwards, George Edwards, Annie Edwards, Benjamin Edwards (1881-?), Harry Edwards (1883-?), and Jane Edwards (1889-?). In early 1883, having heard of the farming opportunities near Dauphin Lake, he and some neighbours went there and he established the first farm in what would become the Rural Municipality of Dauphin. He died on his farm on 5 July 1929 and was buried in the Dauphin Riverside Cemetery. In September 2018, a bronze statue commemorating him was unveiled in Gartmore Park in Dauphin.
