Memorable Manitobans: John Allan Eadie (1920-2014)
Public health official. Born at Brigham, Cumberland, England on 21 October 1920, son of John Allan Eadie and Mary Telford, he was raised at Harrington and attended the Preparatory School at Sedburgh. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh after which he served in the Royal Army Medical Corps during the Second World War. He returned to England after the war and completed his medical studies. In 1946, he married nurse Patricia Eleanor D'Arcy Bruce-Kerr (1922-2000) and, four years later, they moved to Portage la Prairie. In 1955, they moved to Winnipeg where he worked as a Director of Public Health for many years. He rose to become the Director of Epidemiology for the Province of Manitoba and was involved in establishing vision testing in school and a provincial hearing-loss prevention program.
