Memorable Manitobans: Albert Louis “Al” Ducharme (1937-2013)

Municipal official.

Born in St. Vital on 15 August 1937, son of Jean-Louis Ducharme and Mackalena “Lena” Andreychuk (1914-2009), he attended McNeese State College in Louisiana on an athletic scholarship. He returned to Manitoba and served on the St. Vital council (1965-1972) and Winnipeg council (1972-1986). He was the President of the Manitoba Association of Urban Municipalities (1978-1979).

He was married three times, first on 26 May 1962 to Sheelagh Anne Ryan (1941-1969) and they had two daughters. In June 1971, he married Marcia Kennedy and they had a son before divorcing in 1982. In 1987, he married Joyce Marie Grey (1937-2023).

He died at Winnipeg on 19 December 2013. He is commemorated by the Ducharme Waterplay Park in Winnipeg.
