Theophile Alfred Dubois
|
Architect, rower, coach.
Born at Brussels, Belgium on 19 May 1911, son of Felix Alexander Dubois (c1881-1948) and Alice M. Desauw (c1883-1984), the family came to Canada in 1912. He received a baccalaureate degree in Architecture from the University of Manitoba (1955) then worked as an architect and planning examiner for the City of Winnipeg. He retired in 1976.
He began rowing at the Winnipeg Rowing Club at the age of 15 and won championships in the United States and Canada in 1939. He won amateur titles in 1941 and received the Lou Marsh trophy as Canada's top athlete of the year. He qualified for the Olympics in 1948 but the Canadian selection committee decided he was too old to represent the country.
He was a long-time member and coach at the Winnipeg Rowing Club. He was also a keen cyclist and set speed records. He was inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame (1981). He lived at 114 Colony Street. Around 1981, he married Adele Wilcosh.
He died on 10 June 2011.
