Memorable Manitobans: Edmund “Ed” Crowder (1918-2010)

Chemical engineer.

Born at Drumheller, Alberta on 18 July 1918, son of Harry and Elizabeth Crowder, he was a life-long athlete, playing with numerous baseball teams, playing left wing with the University of Alberta Dinos (1937-1940) and later the Trail Smoke Eaters (1944-1949) that won the Allan Cup. After receiving a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Alberta, he worked for a time at COMINCO Smelters at Trail, British Columbia.

His career building and operating fertilizer plants took him to Best Fertilizer (California), Northwest Nitro Chemicals (Alberta), Border Fertilizer (Manitoba) and Simplot Chemicals and Fertilizer (Brandon) where he worked from 1967 to retirement in 1983, at which time he was Chief Executive Officer and General Manager.

He served as Chairman of the Canadian Manufacturers' Association and volunteered with the St. Johns Ambulance, Kiwanis, and Manitoba Innovation and Technology Centre.

He died at Winnipeg on 5 May 2010.
