Farmer, civil servant.
Born at Dover, England on 6 May 1860, he came to Manitoba in 1889 and homesteaded for a few years. He was keenly interested in the breeding of poultry and, during 1905, was the editor of a column on chickens for the Manitoba Free Press. In 1916, he joined the Canadian Army, claiming to be 10 years young than his true age, and served as Staff Sergeant-Major and Barrack Warden. In 1919, he was appointed Assistant Clerk of the Manitoba Legislature. He lived in St. Boniface until 1924 when he moved to Chatfield. He and wife Emily Drake (1859-1936) had six children: Martha D. Costello (1884-?), John Henry “Jack” Costello (1887-1944), Valentine de Lacy “Val” Costello (1889-1973), Rupert Edward Costello, Francis Robert Costello, and Samuel Costello (1902-1961). Two of his sons were killed during military service in the First World War. He died at Winnipeg on 17 June 1926 and was buried in the Brookside Cemetery.
