Memorable Manitobans: David Clawson (1891-1961)

Fireman.

Born at Belfast, Ireland in December 1891, he immigrated to Canada in 1910. He settled at Winnipeg and joined the ranks of the Winnipeg Fire Department in 1913. He attained the ranks of Master Mechanic (1936) and Deputy Fire Chief (1946), after which he was Fire Chief of Winnipeg (1947-1957). Upon his retirement, he was made an honourary life member of the Winnipeg Fire Fighters Association. He married Mary Jane “Minnie” Boal (?-1969), daughter of Frank and Isabella Boal, at Winnipeg on 8 April 1915. They had three daughters; Dorothy Evelyn Clawson (c1917-1985, wife of Ernest Samuel Lennon) and Lillian Clawson (wife of J. B. Mearon), and Isabel Clawson (?-1958). He died at Winnipeg on 8 October 1961 and was buried in Brookside Cemetery.
