Indigenous leader.
Also known by her spirit name Pitaaycommigook (Thunderbird Woman), she was a respected Métis, Ojibwe, and Cree Elder whose life was dedicated to strengthening Indigenous communities in Manitoba. After moving to Winnipeg in 1966, she became a passionate advocate for Indigenous housing, education, cultural preservation, and community development, helping to shape initiatives that continue to benefit Indigenous people today.
Known for her warmth, wisdom, and commitment to service, she contributed to the development of Kinew Housing, helped preserve Métis language and oral history, co-authored a history of the Winnipeg Indian and Metis Friendship Centre, and served in leadership roles within government and community organizations. She is remembered as a tireless champion for Indigenous self-determination, a mentor to many, and a compassionate leader.
She died on 24 May 2024.
