Memorable Manitobans: Walter Steve “Wally” Cherkas (1938-2003)

Community activist.

Born at Winnipeg on 20 March 1938, eldest son of Steve and Nellie Cherkas, he played the accordion with a band called The Rythyms and was a commercial artist by profession. He was President of the Christmas Cheer Board, had a passion for sports, vacationing in the United States and the family cabin at the lake. He died on 8 March 2003 while vacationing in Mexico.
