Memorable Manitobans: James Lorne Carmichael (1918-2014)

Building contractor.

Born on a farm at Collingwood, Ontario on 27 September 1918, he worked as a boatsman on the Great Lakes in the early 1930s then as a machinist during the Second World War. He worked in construction at Thunder Bay before moving to Shilo to work on a project. Around 1950, he established Arlington Builders Limited that was responsible for construction of numerous significant buildings around Manitoba. After retirement, he had a 1000-acre hobby farm in the Interlake. On 10 July 1948, he married Shirley (1923-2012) at Terrace Bay, Ontario and they had a son and three daughters. In 1994, he moved to Ladner, British Columbia where he died on 5 April 2014.
