Memorable Manitobans: Bruce “Hoagy” Carmichael (1934-2019)

Athlete.

Born at Winnipeg on 28 March 1934, son of Evelyn and Jack Carmichael, he attended Daniel McIntyre Collegiate and United College. He played professional hockey for over 20 years and, during the 1950s and 1960s, was “Rookie of the Year” in the American Hockey League and Western Hockey League. He was inducted into the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame as a player (1997) and member of the MJHL St. Boniface Canadiens (1952-1953). He was also inducted into the Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame as a member of the Fort Whyte Baseball Tournament Team (1998). After his playing career was over, he coached minor league hockey. He died at Burnaby, British Columbia on 26 April 2019.
