Memorable Manitobans: Greta Byrne (1898-1978)

Social worker.

Born at Forest, Ontario on 4 July 1898, one of ten children of Jennie Ferguson and George Carson, she left home in 1919 and arrived in Winnipeg during the General Strike. She was married twice, first on 27 June 1923 to William Herman Hawes (1885-1934). On 4 July 1941, she married Joseph Byrne (?-?) but they separated in 1955. She began working as a homemaker with the Family Bureau of Winnipeg around 1935, looking after children in broken homes, and continued with it until retirement in 1970. In recognition of her community service, she received a Manitoba Centennial Medal from the Manitoba Historical Society. She died at Winnipeg on 16 November 1978 and her cremains were interred in the Pineview Memorial Gardens.
