Memorable Manitobans: Michael Buyachok (1939-2022)Cleric. Born at Strasbourg, France on 16 October 1939, eldest son of Andrey Buyachok (1909-1975) and Catherine Buyachok (1917-2019), he came to Canada with his family in 1948 and settled at Winnipeg. In 1964, he undertook studies at St. Josephat's Seminary and Pontifical Institute in Rome, being ordained to the priesthood in August 1969. He then completed a Masters degree in Theology at Rome. He served at Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church at Ethelbert (1971-1974), St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church at Winnipeg (1974-1994), Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Resurrection at Dauphin (1994-2005), and Sts. Vladimir and Olga Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral at Winnipeg (2005-2019). He also served as Vice Chancellor, Chancellor and Econome for the Archeparchy of Winnipeg, trustee (1974-1982) and Chair (1982-1983) of the Transcona-Springfield School Division, and President of the National Federation of Priests Council (1995-1999). In recognition of his community service, he received a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal (2012). He died at Winnipeg on 22 October 2022.
