Analytical chemist.
Born at Glasgow, Scotland on 26 March 1878, son of John James Blackie and Elizabeth Ferguson, he apprenticed in a chemical manufacturing plant before serving in British forces during the South African war. He return to his profession in 1902 then moved to Winnipeg in 1907.
He was first employed in the chemical department of the City of Winnipeg, in a building where the Cornish Library now stands, becoming its head in 1911. During the First World War, he was loaned to the Imperial Ministry of Munitions to supervise large explosive contracts at Montreal, Quebec. He was an original member of the Canadian Institute of Chemistry and was Manitoba chairman for several years.
On 2 July 1914, he married Matilda Edwards Norrington (1883-1977) at Winnipeg and they had three children: John Henry Albert Blackie (1917-?), Sheila Mary Blackie (1920-?), and Anne Blackie (1922-?). He was a President and life member of the Manitoba Game and Fish Association, and a member of the Scientific Club of Winnipeg.
He retired to Kelowna, British Columbia in 1943 and died there on 9 October 1953.
