Memorable Manitobans: Maria Kozak Bilous (1912-2003)

Community activist.

Born in Ukraine on 20 June 1912 to Ilias Kozak and Anna Wawrykovich, she immigrated to Canada and settled in Dauphin in 1929. She and her husband Julius Bilous operated Bilous Market Gardens. She was a member of the Ukrainian Women’s Association of Canada and the Ukrainian National Home Choir, serving at both the provincial and national levels. She also served on the Dauphin Hospital Board, was a member of the Dauphin Council of Women Board of Directors and Canada’s National Ukrainian Festival for six years. She died at Winnipeg on 2 March 2003 and was interred in the Dauphin Riverside Cemetery.
