Memorable Manitobans: Dallis “Knobby” Beck (1927-1990)Journalist. Born at Brandon, Manitoba on 8 October 1927, he was working at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan when, in 1953, he moved to Winnipeg to join the staff of the Winnipeg Tribune, covering sports over the next twelve years. After a few brief employments in newspapers in Ontario, Alberta and BC, he returned to Winnipeg to work for the Winnipeg Free Press, where he worked until his death. He was a past president of the Manitoba Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association and in January 1989 was inducted into their Media Roll of Honour. He was an original member of the Grey Owl Golf Tournament Committee and remained active in that capacity lifelong. Beck was also an avid curler. He died at Winnipeg on 21 October 1990.
