Memorable Manitobans: Frederick Leo Bawlf (1890-1964)

Athlete, grain merchant.

Born at Winnipeg on 11 November 1890, son of Nicholas Bawlf and Katherine Madden, he attended St. Boniface College and St. Thomas Military School at St. Paul, Minnesota. in his early 20s, he captained the Winnipeg Victorias hockey team to three Allan Cup championships. After completing his education, he joined his father's grain firm. At the time of his death, he was the First Vice-President of the N. Bawlf Grain Company, Vice-President of the Bawlf Terminal Elevator Company, and a director of Bawlf Securities Limited. In 1916, he married Mae Evelyn Nicholson (1891-1960, daughter of Edward Nicholson) of Winnipeg. They had two children. He died at Victoria, British Columbia on 29 April 1964.
