Memorable Manitobans: Irene Maude Barton (1892-1971)

Nurse.

Born at Pine Ridge, Kent County, New Brunswick on 21 April 1892, daughter of Clara Barton, she trained as a nurse then served with the Canadian Expeditionary Force between 1915 to 1918. After her military discharge, she came to Winnipeg where, for many years, she was Matron at the Deer Lodge Hospital. She was then Matron of the Veterans' Home on Academy Road until retirement in 1954. She was an Honorary Life Member of the Manitoba Association of Registered Nurses, a charter member of the Royal Canadian Legion (Deer Lodge Branch), President (1966-1967) and Honorary Life Member of the Convalescent Home of Winnipeg, and a member of the United Church of Canada. She received a Manitoba Centennial Medal in recognition of her nursing work. She died unmarried at the Convalescent Home of Winnipeg on 8 August 1971.
