Businessman.
Born at Leonidovka, Ukraine on 13 August 1918, one of seven children of Jacob and Anna Banman, his family immigrated to Canada in 1926 and settled on a farm near Landmark. During the Second World War, he served as a conscientious objector at Clear Lake, after which he returned to farming. In 1944, he bought a milk transfer business at Greenland from his brothers-in-law and operated it for the next eight years. In 1952, he bought property at the intersection of Highways 12 and 52 at Steinbach and opened a gas station and coffee bar. Four years later, he established a Volkswagen dealership and, in coming years, he founded Nissan, Hyundai, and Honda dealerships.
On 27 September 1942, he married Barbara Enns (1918-2008) and they had three sons. He founded the Steinbach fly-In golf course and Steinbach Grace Mennonite Church, and served on the boards for the Steinbach Chamber of Commerce and Steinbach Credit Union. He was a life member in the Progressive Conservative Party of Manitoba.
He died at Steinbach on 27 February 2011.
