Memorable Manitobans: George Balacko (?-2017)Civil engineer. Son of Dimitri “Dan” Balacko (1902-1985) and Rosalia “Rose” Snizik (c1906-1966), he received a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Manitoba and a Masters in Environmental Engineering from Northwestern University (Evanston, Illinois). He worked in the Health and Environment departments of the provincial government as well as Health Canada, and was active in the Manitoba Water and Wastewater Association and American Water Works Association, from which he received several awards for excellence. He taught courses at Red River College and the University of Manitoba for operators of water treatment plants and waste water treatment plants, and is recognized for his work by the George Balacko Operator of the Year Award.
