Memorable Manitobans: Clare Lavere “Chuck” Atkins (1928-1989)

Educator.

Born at Brandon on 14 May 1928, son of Claude Lavierre Atkins (?-?) and Sylvia Orelea Beech (1897-1988), he grew up at Oak Lake and earned a BA degree (1968) from the University of Manitoba. He taught at John G. Glassco School (1957-1965, Principal), a school at Canadian Forces Base Shilo, and was a Principal (?-1979) in the Transcona Springfield School Division before suffering a stroke in 1979 which ended his teaching career. He married Irene Robinson (c1933-1963) and had a son, and later married Gail Frances Moss at the Windsor Park United Church on 22 December 1973. He died at the Middlechurch Home on 16 October 1989 and was buried in the Glen Eden Memorial Gardens.
