Lawyer.
Born at Norwood on 23 September 1923, son of Orange William Oswald Appleby (c1886-1960) and Hazel Irene Booth (c1895-1980), he graduated from the Norwood Collegiate then was pursuing post-secondary education when he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War. After his military discharge, he returned to the University of Manitoba, served as President of the Students Union (1949), and received BA and law degrees. He had a law practice with his childhood friend Aleck Thorarinson and was active in the oil industry and land development.
In 1950, he married Constance Lillian Johannesson (1925-2007, daughter of Konrad Jonasson “Konnie” Johannesson) and they had five children. He was President of the Young Liberals Federation of Canada and Manitoba Liberal Association. He was a St. Boniface city alderman (1956-1957, 1958-1959) and served as city solicitor (ten years). He and friend Fred Colebourn (1925-1998, son of Harry Colebourn) formed the Winnie the Bear Commemorative Committee that made sculptures for the zoos in Winnipeg and London (England). In recognition of his role in the project, sculptor William Epp placed an apple on the base of the statue.
He died at the St. Boniface Hospital on 17 October 2012.
